The Challenge

The Metis Settlements of Alberta through the Metis Settlements General Council (MSGC) faced a number of critical issues at the time they retained Donovan Creative: under-focused brand image and perception, a website that could not be updated dynamically, and marketing and communications collaterals that didn’t position the GC optimally or take full advantage of telling the unique and differentiated story of the Settlements.

The Solution

We developed a multi-channel brand foundation and public relations plan for the General Council, created a stronger public face that helped them defend and protect precious ground politically and publicly, and helped to open new communications channels online and offline. Our brand foundation, 'Making History', became the rallying point for Canada's first and only self-legislating Metis government; it was a position that reinforced the perception of vigorous independence that characterizes the organization, and the GC’s constitutional commitment to protecting self-directed autonomy for its over 9,000 members.

The Result

We helped the MSCG project a new voice in media, government, and industry, on and offline. Through an assessment of their brand, realignment of core messages, and redevelopment of key marketing and branded collateral, we helped position the MSGC as a more focused political entity – with a strong position in the past, present and future economic, social, and political development of the province of Alberta.

Our brand development and public relations planning and execution helped give the MSGC added purchase on political and economic issues, new relationships in the oil and gas industry, a more relevant perception in mainstream media, and better overall communication with membership and local settlement councils.
