As we reported earlier on this blog, the sale of smartphone and tablet shipments in 2011 has now surpassed those of desktop and notebook shipments. (see Slide 7 here.)  Moreover, daily time spent in mobile apps now surpasses desktop and mobile web consumption, and will grow exponentially in the next 12 months.

Social media marketers need to take note: where are people spending their time, which apps? When Apple’s new iOS5 hits the deck in September, the numbers are going to spiral upward even more, especially for Twitter use since it will be embedded in the iOS.

What’s interesting about the mobile app usage is that Social networking dominates the numbers with 32% and games are responsible for 47%.

Debbie Henley of Social Media Examiner put together a monster list of the 44 most useful mobile apps today for the Social Media marketer. We’re reproducing them here so you’ll have them all in one place to peruse if you’re reading this on an iPad or iPhone, or you’re eating a snack or making a list of what you want to pick up. Remember, though, things are going to change when Apple’s iOS changes. One thing that’s not on this list that we recommend for serious Twitter users is the Tweetbot app.

Here’s Debbie’s list:

In Search of Apps

As a social media marketer, you’ll likely want to find apps that will help you keep up with social networking and stay productive while on the go. Many of us hear about apps from friends and colleagues, from articles we read, from searching around on Apple’s App Store to see what’s new and through dedicated search engines such as Chomp.

iphone appApps to help manage your time, projects and clients.

If the app is free or relatively inexpensive, then chances are we may be willing to give it a whirl. But with 500,000 apps on the App Store in numerous categories and apps literally being released every day, it’s hard to stay on top of them.

While Apple’s campaign “There’s an app for that” makes many of us now associate the topic of mobile apps with Apple, the reality is that companies such as Android,  Nokia, Blackberry, and Palm all sell apps, too.

In this article, I’m going to focus on apps that are compatible with iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad (iOS) [These are the biggest sellers: iPhone is now 66% of the smartphone market globally—Ed.] because those are the devices I’m most familiar with and could access for the purpose of testing.

Useful Apps List

The apps listed below were recommended by a number of businesspeople through a query I posted on HARO, others that people had been talking about in blog posts, on Quora and social networking sites. The apps range in price; many are free and the most expensive one listed is $9.99.

Because new apps are literally released on a daily basis, it’s nearly impossible for this to be a conclusive list. But hopefully it’ll give you ideas about some apps you’d like to try. I hope you’ll take a few moments at the end to share a few of your favorites, too.

Here’s the list in alphabetical order:

You should be a part of a contest for one of the best websites on the web.
I’m going to highly recommend this site!

  2. Carin:

There must be some way to totally block all these spam web pages
which I continue coming across. I’m sick and tired of it. I keep thinking “oh yeah, finally! a site with my exact term”…. but it is just a website jam packed with ads and ads. Yours was the first relevant site I’ve run into in over 30 minutes of research.
Congratz on that. Saved to favorites for later!

  3. Sven:

Holy moly, how long did it take you to create this? Did you compose this all by yourself
or did you pay somebody? Well either way, it’s high quality stuff and it is really worth a read; continue the good work. I will be back later on and I trust you’ll have more
