2011 marked a special year for the Stollery Children’s Hospital Foundation’s Snowflake Gala. Not only was it their “best ever,” but also it marked 15 years for the fabulous event.
Every year, the Stollery’s agency on record gets a chance to donate their skill sets in making the night a success. Marking the anniversary, this year DONOVAN was given the opportunity to do something special. The night was to be a royal occasion; tails, gowns, gold, glitz and glamour.

The design process often starts with a dose of inspiration. We had a theme, a long list of deliverables, and so we began. The first step was deciding on a visual theme that all 30-odd pieces could follow. We started with a unified snowflake. Combining the form of a royal crown with the likeliness of your typical six-pointed snowflake, the foundation was born: A six-pointed royal snowflake.

Being the go-to children’s hospital in Alberta, a large portion of the attendees were kids. So why not make the invitation something that would peek a child’s interest, and hold an adult’s intrigue? Talking with the good people at the Burke Group of Companies (official printers of the SFG) we set out with quite the end goal: an invite that would pop! Literally.

It’s not every day you get the go-ahead to produce a pop-up card. *Many prototypes were harmed in the making of this card.

The end result was a thing of beauty. Burke Group did an amazing job printing and putting the package together.

For many of the DONOVAN staff, it was our first experience with the Snowflake Gala. Walking into the Shaw Conference Centre, we were not to be disappointed. The entire venue was transformed into a royal event.

Castle from the invite was recreated on stage. Shining like diamonds.

The most successful Gala yet was taking shape.

This year’s event was a great success. We are already looking forward to doing it all over again next year!
