DONOVAN recently welcomed a new arrival to our growing office – an Edmonton Food Bank box. Recognizing that it’s hard to be creative and innovative when you’re running on an empty stomach, we’ve come together to feed our community and strategically provide complete, nutritious lunches for school-aged children.

I once lived on butterscotch pudding for a week. It was my first week in my first apartment. That was over 10 years ago, and since then, and with two children, I have graduated from the “How to Write a Proper Grocery List” program. I have also become acutely aware of the value and necessity of a nutritionally complete grocery cart.

My oldest daughter was my first grocery cart companion. Her incentive for good behavior was to pet the big plastic dog that stood guard beside the food bank box. Both my children accompany me now and we feed that box the same snacks that they love. They both recognize the importance of the box that gets filled and emptied into one big cupboard. That is the general idea, I suppose – that giant cupboard feeding our city.

DONOVAN agrees that childhood creativity is fuelled by warm memories and full stomachs, of happily sharing lunch with your best friend, laughing. Filling the big box is this month’s group goal for giving back to our community.

DONOVAN encourages everyone to support their local food bank.

  1. Rene ladouceur:

Great to read a young mothers point of view on the food bank

    • Melina:

As a single mother I can appreciate the value of the neighborhood foodbank. I have accessed this resource myself… I’ve come to realize that people of all walks of life need help from time to time, it’s great for companies like Donovan to become involved.

  2. Janice:

Before I became a single mother 3 years ago, I never thought I would need to access our local food bank. But money got tight and I had to feed my babies! I think its wonderful that Donovan Creative is supporting this desperately needed resource and its nice to see it from a different perspective, like Crystal’s. We all need a little help once in a while and there is no shame in that.

  3. Ashley:

Butterscotch pudding for a week – I hear that! I can relate to the eating habits of the single life… Ohh, the days!

I am now expecting a child due in April and have done a complete turnaround in my understanding of the value of eating healthy, and my want for the less fortunate to be able to enjoy a healthy meal as well.

After reading this (and thinking about all those times I have walked by the ‘big plastic dog’) I will start giving baby food and diapers for other mothers in need of that extra helping hand.

‘The giant cupboard feeding our city.’ – Wonderfully put Crystal!

Great job Donovan! I hope others feel a greater importance of the food bank after reading this, as I did. =)

  4. Tina:

I read this and thought yes!! Its true, priorities change, and we have kids that we worry about feeding well everyday, proper nutrition is top priority as a mother. But really, we should step back and worry about other kids, the ones that aren’t so lucky. I’m going to bring my kids to pet the dog, and let them pick out what they think someone else would really enjoy. Great piece Donovan!

  5. Thank you so much for all of your positive comments. We are proud to give back to the community, and this is an ongoing initiative that we plan to address in various ways.

The DONOVAN team is so happy that this piece has been an inspiration and reminder for others to give back.
    Cheers!
