The Edmonton Public Library is one of the world’s leading library systems. They needed a new brand to reflect their modern services and their relevance to the community beyond books on shelves. We wanted the new brand to tell the story of EPL’s modern reality and use it as a platform to help us grow greater public awareness of the wide range of digital media collections, programs, services and events offered across 17 branches.

Because promoting public dialogue and literacy are core parts of the EPL brand, we evolved a brand promise that helped us convey these ideas while also acting as a call to support your library—‘Spread the Words.’ This became the foundation of the brand launch and subsequent marketing campaign. We launched an integrated campaign involving TV, bus kings, interactive ads, and a host of collateral and signage. DONOVAN also developed a new website that was tied into a robust online catalogue and linked to social media channels so library users could share their interests. Response to the brand and campaign has been overwhelmingly positive, raising the profile of EPL with current and new users. The new brand has started to attract interest from segments of the community who, until now, weren’t library users at all. In 2010, this rebrand and marketing campaign won three Summit International Awards for creative excellence, four International Davey Awards, and one Getting Attention Tagline Award. In 2011, it won the “Oscar” in the world of library marketing: the John Cotton Dana Library Public Relations Award.
